I've been going on random walks in the city lately (now that the weather have warmed up!), and I've noticed my interest in hand-painted, old, or quirky signage. The Charles Scribner's Sons used to be a publisher in the States and printed a large number of religious and reference titles; it underwent a few change-of-hands in the late 1970's and early 80's, and is now owned by Simon & Schuster. Cucumbers: with vinaigrette above, with feta and a bit of chili powder (for experiment) below.
I don't usually buy cucumbers - it's crunchy and it's got that field-y flavor that makes me feel like a cow munching on grass. Last week, however, it was on sale and super-fresh, so I decided to give them another try and see if I could make friends with it.

And I did. :)

Atlantic Avenue Tunnel
That's Bob, sitting with his back against the tunnel, sharing his story of re-discovering the Atlantic Avenue Tunnel. He gave a fascinating and very well-rounded history of the tunnel, its workers, the politics at work at the time, and the various uses the tunnel became used for before it was sealed up. He does monthly tours; it's only $15, and definitely worth it if you like forgotten underground spaces.
